Dark Movie Franchises I Keep Coming Back To
Some movie franchises are not exactly cheerful comfort viewing.
They are full of monsters, aliens, vampires, predators, infected cities, blood, shadows, collapsing worlds and characters who usually have a fairly rough time of it.
And yet, these are the franchises I keep coming back to.
Not because every film is perfect. Far from it. Some of these series have brilliant opening films, messy sequels, strange side turns, questionable decisions and endings that do not always land. But there is something about dark franchise films that makes them very easy to revisit, especially if you enjoy owning films on DVD, Blu-ray or 4K instead of relying entirely on streaming.
They build worlds.
They create rules.
They give you creatures, timelines, weapons, heroes, villains and mythology to get lost in.
Sometimes they are intelligent science fiction.
Sometimes they are gothic action.
Sometimes they are pure guilty pleasure nonsense.
But when they work, they really work.
This page is where I am gathering my darker franchise posts together as I build out this side of Phoenix DVD Blog.
Why Dark Movie Franchises Work So Well
A good dark franchise does more than tell one story.
It creates a world you want to return to, even when that world is dangerous, ugly or completely falling apart.
That is probably why these films work so well on disc. You are not just watching one film and moving on. You are stepping back into a universe. You know the rules. You know the tone. You know the kind of thing you are going to get.
With Alien, you get cold space, corporate greed and body horror.
With Predator, you get the hunt.
With Underworld, you get vampires, Lycans, leather coats and gothic action.
With Resident Evil, you get zombies, Umbrella, chaos and increasingly ridiculous set pieces.
With Riddick, you get darkness, survival and one of the stranger sci-fi anti-heroes of the last few decades.
None of these franchises are flawless, but they all have something that makes them stick.
Alien vs Predator – A Messy Crossover I Still Enjoy
Alien vs Predator probably should have been one of the greatest monster crossovers ever put on screen.
The idea is simple and brilliant.
Xenomorphs.
Predators.
Humans caught in the middle.
What more do you need?
Of course, the results were mixed. The films do not reach the heights of Alien or Predator at their best, but I still have a soft spot for them. There is something enjoyable about seeing these two creatures thrown into the same world, even when the story around them is not as strong as it could have been.
For me, AVP works best when I stop expecting it to be a perfect continuation of either franchise and just enjoy it as a dark, monster-heavy crossover. It is messy, but it is still very watchable.

Underworld – Vampires, Lycans and a Franchise That Started Strong
The Underworld series has always had a very specific look and feel.
Blue-black lighting.
Rainy cities.
Vampires.
Lycans.
Leather coats.
Ancient grudges.
Lots of slow-motion gunfire.
It is not subtle, but it knows exactly what kind of world it wants to live in.
The first film especially has a great dark action atmosphere. It mixes gothic horror with modern weapons and builds a surprisingly interesting mythology around the vampire and Lycan war.
As the series goes on, things become more complicated, and not always for the better. But I still think Underworld deserves its place in this cluster because it has a strong identity. You know an Underworld film when you see one.
It may not be high art, but it is one of those franchises that is very easy to sit back into when you are in the mood for something dark, stylish and full of monster-war nonsense.

Predator – The Hunt That Keeps Changing Shape
The original Predator is still the perfect version of the idea.
A group of heavily armed soldiers enter the jungle.
Something starts hunting them.
One by one, the balance of power changes.
That is all it needed.
The genius of Predator is how simple it is. It starts as a military action film and slowly turns into a survival horror film. By the end, all the guns, muscle and bravado have been stripped away, and it comes down to one man using instinct, mud, traps and intelligence to survive.
The franchise has tried different directions since then, some better than others.
Predator 2 moved the hunt into the city.
Predators turned the idea into a bigger game.
The Predator tried to expand the mythology, but probably pushed things too far.
Prey stripped everything back again and reminded us why the idea worked in the first place.
For me, Predator is at its best when the hunt feels personal, dangerous and physical. The more complicated the franchise becomes, the less frightening the Predator can feel.
But when it works, it is still one of the best dark sci-fi action ideas ever put on screen.

Alien – The Dark Sci-Fi Franchise That Still Casts the Longest Shadow
Alien is probably the heavyweight of this entire cluster.
The first film is not just a monster movie in space. It is slow, cold, claustrophobic and deeply uncomfortable. The Nostromo feels lived-in and industrial. The crew feel ordinary. The creature feels unknowable.
Then Aliens does something almost impossible. It changes the genre completely and still works. Instead of trying to copy the first film, it turns the nightmare into a war movie, while still keeping the fear, the tension and the horror of the creature.
After that, the franchise becomes much more uneven.
Alien 3 has its defenders.
Alien Resurrection is strange.
Prometheus and Alien: Covenant try to expand the origin story and mythology, with mixed results.
But even when Alien is uneven, it still feels important. The design, the atmosphere, the creature, Ripley, the corporate greed, the body horror and the sheer darkness of the world all make it one of the most influential science fiction franchises ever made.
It is the kind of series that rewards rewatching, even when you are arguing with some of the choices.

Final Thoughts – Not Perfect Franchises, But Very Rewatchable Ones
The thing I like about these franchises is that they do not have to be perfect to be worth revisiting.
In fact, some of the appeal comes from the unevenness.
You get the brilliant first films.
You get the strange sequels.
You get the attempts to expand the mythology.
You get the films that go too far.
You get the later entries that unexpectedly bring things back to basics.
That is part of the fun of following a franchise over time.
Some of these films are classics.
Some are guilty pleasures.
Some are better than people remember.
Some are probably worse than I want to admit.
But they all belong to that darker corner of film collecting that still works brilliantly on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K.
And as I add more posts to Phoenix DVD Blog, I will keep updating this page with the dark franchises I keep returning to.
Thanks for Reading,
David
